Kristina's Race for Peace 5K (aka Violence Prevention 5K) Waterloo, IL June 13 2009

Marvin...Same race as last year, but was renamed and the date move to early June instead of late May. It's a small race that is a fund raiser for the Domestic Violence Prevention Center. Dave and I was looking forwards to running this year with the chance of scoring in the top three. The race course starts out running down a rather large hill. It's rather easy to start out to fast, but this was the third time I ran this and was able to get the pace slower. The rest of the course zig zag through Waterloo and there are times I would wonder if I made the right turn. Around a mile and half the course changes into going back uphill. At this point I was all alone in the lead, and finish the race in first place. The field for this race was small only 32 people. I finished with a time of 19:21 1st overall. I received a small ribbon metal which was a let down compared to the the large overall trophies that they handed out last year. They had many nice door prizes. I won a t-shirt. I was hoping for the birdhouse like I won last year. Oh yeah Dave and I did win the babies..... lol

(David) One of my goals for this race was to place in the top three runners. They give nice trophies of etched glass, see our blog for this race last year to see one. Well, the good news is I got second overall in the race, the bad news is they stopped giving trophies. My time this year was actually slower than last year’s time by 20 seconds, but there were fewer runners so that helped me get second. This year’s race was scheduled the same day as the “Race for the Cure” in St. Louis so I don’t know if that made people not show up for this one. My overall time was 20.50. I maybe could have been faster but there was not a lot of incentive because there wasn’t other runners pushing me from behind and I knew I couldn’t catch Marvin so I just maintained. Like usual I liked this race and think more people should run. I think the coordinators should advertise more. My brother-in-law said he searched it on the internet and could not find it. They should probably list it on some of the running sites. Again this year they gave quite a few attendance prizes. I was lucky enough to win a $10 Best Buy gift card. Also my sister Paula and her family were there to support Marvin and me so that was nice. Overall it was a good race.
