(Marvin) I'm a little late on posting this one. The Touring Cyclist Biathlon at Fairview Heights IL. Dave wasn't able to make this one because of work. We did it last year as a team and was able to snag third place. My biggest complaint about this race is that the distance is not accurately marked. The run is revised to 4.5 miles but is closer to 5 miles, and the bike is revised to 22 but my gps read over 23 miles the same as last years reading. The run starts out downhill, and it is easy to get carried away going to fast. It goes on for over 1.5 miles and then the big hill hits. It is a tough climb almost a walk especially with the heat then it is a gradual grade climb back to the start. The run was not my greatest. I was struggling with the heat. The bike started out great and then my calf cramps around the 15 mile mark. I had to slow down quite a bit to recover and that's when the bikes started to pass me. I was concern about hydration and I didn't have enough liquids with me and thus the cramps. Next year I'll wear the camel bak. Towards the end a Giant TCR passes me with a word of encouragement. That was enough for me to be able to pace him. I finally started to get back up to speed. On the final stretch is one long steep hill, and that is my strong point. I passed the TCR and three others and coming to the final stretch that is about 1/2 of flat ground to the finish. I was yards away from finishing when the TCR out sprints me to the finish to take 3rd in my age group. Very disappointing for me, but a exciting finish. I had a finishing time of 1:41:46 16th/119 and 4th in age 30-34.
