rvin) Hofbraufest 5K was a race I probably shouldn't have done. It was the day before I did the Touring cyclist biathlon. It was hard to pass up for it was the 1st annual race, and that makes for a chance to make for an overall win. Boy was I wrong about the turn out, and competition. The draw mostly came from the metro east of St. Louis with many good runners. I skipped my ritual of drinking french vanilla cappuccino at work for a pick me up. I did this to see if it would make a difference in my racing. The whole race felt like I had weights on my feet with each footfall being a hard effort, so maybe I did need the caffeine. The weather also was turning back to hot humid July weather after several days of cooler weather. When I was running east there was no moving air and the sun made it feel like running in an oven. My time was very disappointing to me. I finished with 20:23, 2nd in age 30-39, and 21/169. I finally cut my hair too and to all the people that said I would run faster with shorter hair the answer is no. The race seemed well organize they had plenty of attendance prizes that was taking forever to announce. We couldn't stay for the awards because I had a chiropractors appointment to keep. I'll run it again as long as it not the same weekend with the Touring Cyclist Biathlon._
(David) Was this the race I beat Marvin? I guess not. My time here was slower than my other times. I kind of wonder that maybe I am used to being behind Marvin so if I start catching up to him I slow down. I do know that when we ran east it seemed really hot and humid. My time was 20:34, first mile of 6:10. I came in third in our age group (30-39) and 24/169. They gave top three overall trophies, so technically I was fifth in age group. I don't like big age groups. The turnout for the race was really good. I did not expect so many people there for a first time race. I guess the promoters of the race didn't expect that good of a turnout either, they ran out of t-shirts and Marvin didn't get one. They said they would mail him one. Overall the course was good. It was an out and back that was relatively flat. Afterward they had a nice spread of drinks and food. They also had a lot of door prizes. Like Marvin said, that took awhile. I did win something, but we had already left so a guy I work with picked it up and I told him he could keep it. I think it was a little Coca-Cola radio. Before the race I forgot to drink my prerace Frappacino (?). I don't know if that made me slower or not. I do know that my thighs felt very heavy and it seemed like I couldn hardly lift them. Overall it was a pretty good race. The course was good and the people nice. I hope they change the age groups, I suggested it. I hope to go back next year.
