(Marvin) Past and present. Six years ago Dave talked me into doing our first race and I have been hooked on running ever since. The picture is almost in the same spot as six years ago, a race to the finish.....damn, Dave is getting fast : ) This race is always hot, but short. It is nice to run in front of the parade crowd. I know lots of people there from work that cheer or sarcastically jeer me on. I was wearing clima cool shoes that are fairly thin and my feet felt like they were on fire with each step on the road. I had 5:38 on the first mile which I wanted to be in the 5:20's : ( I finished with 11:10 2nd in age 19th/207. I was 11 second slower this year which left me a little disappointed, but that's the runner's dilemma. Overall I'm satisfied being only 5 months out of knee surgery. It was good to have our friends Jeremy pushing his kids and his wife Rachel run too. It is nice after the race for everyone to get together and tell their war stories.

This is my (David's) favorite race to run. It is short, 3K, and there are a lot of people watching since it is run on the parade route right before the parade. However, I only heard one person yell my name. Also, there are a lot friends that run in the race. Some I didn't have a chance to talk to and others I didn't even know ran it until afterwards. Plus I saw a guy I used to work with six years ago there. When I started running, one of my main goals was to get a trophy at this race. I finally did it last year on the fifth try. This year my time was 11:11, beating last year's time by 50 seconds. My goal was to get under 11:30. I came in first in my age group (35-39) and 20th / 207. This year one of my goals is to beat Marvin in a race, any race. This race may have been my best shot. Marvin doesn't run as well in the heat and I seem to do better, for myself, on shorter courses. Oh well, he beat me by one second. Maybe I should have tried to grab his hair and pull him down. My first mile time was 5:47, nine seconds behind Marvin, so I was catching up a little. I think the interval training Marvin and I have been doing has helped me in races like this. If anyone wants to run a fun race with a lot of participants and spectators, this is the one in Southern Illinois.
