(Marvin) Dave found out about a week ago of this race. I was looking forwards to not racing that weekend, but it was hard to pass up since it was on a Sunday and I have Sunday/Mondays off of work. The weather was perfect; cool and in the 60's. I thought that this would be a small race, but it had a decent draw of runners. That was the bad thing, it drew the good runners from the Belleville area like Jackson from Tanzania, a sub 17:00 5k runner. My legs were feeling heavy on my warm up runs, but it didn't seem too bad when the race started. My first mile was 5:56 and I wanted to be under 5:50 to strike for a time under 19:00, so this started the mental game for me of not going to make it. Dave was not to far behind me during the entire race and caught up to me on the last stretch. I was going to let him go, but he gave me words of encouragment and I put in more effort even though my stomach said it wanted to hurl. I was able to pull away and finished with a 7 second lead. I had a time of 19:17 three seconds faster than last weekend, 1st in age and 5th overall. It is Dave's goal to beat me at a race this year and he almost did it. I told him that he should be faster than me if he could just train more, and now our speed work on Tuesdays is starting to pay off. Will he beat me in a race this year? Maybe, so stayed tuned.......-
Hey, I already beat him in a race, see the Tour de Red Bud. I felt good going into this race. It is a relatively flat out and back. I felt like I started strong and was ahead of Marvin for a little while, which always makes me think I start off too fast. Of course he passes me later. I keep him in sight and about two tenths of a mile from the finish I make my move. I catch up to him and say, "Let's go." Well, he went and I didn't. I think I made my move too soon and used up my energy. My stomach really started to hurt and Marvin ended up beating me. I did set a new personal record, second time in two weeks. My time was 19:24 and I finished second in 30-39 and sixth overall. I did not pre-register for this race and ended up not getting a t-shirt. They had attendance prizes, but we didn't win. Overall, it was a good race that I hope to do again.
