Optimist 5K Run For Youth Waterloo IL 8/25/2007

(Marvin) A little break from the heat at the Optimist 5k Run for Youth with overcast skies. I knew that some of Dave's relative were going to be there, but was surprised and enthused that Brad (Dave's brother in law) was going to run too. I ran this race a couple of years ago, and it draws in the younger crowds. It is amusing to watch the younger inexperienced runners with their egos and friends to start out sprinting and run out of gas within the first quarter mile. I done this myself and sometimes still find myself going out to fast. I ran 19:20 and first in age 30-34, but I was the only one in my age. I finished in the top 10 and Dave wasn't too far behind me. Thanks Paula for taking pictures and cheering us on. It always helps to have that extra push of someone cheering you on.

(David) I liked this race. For some reason I felt really positive going into this race. The weather was nice too. Like Marvin said there were a lot of younger runners. About a mile into it I heard one say, "This is hard," and I never saw him again. There were quite a few that started off strong and then walked. I set a personal record here of 19:31 and got first in my age group of 35-39. Marvin was 11 seconds in front of me, maybe next week. My brother-in-law Brad ran also and did very well coming in second in the same age group as me. He is pictured with Marvin and I in the first picture. This race was also nice because some of my family was there, my sisters Paula and Mary, and Mary's girl Sarah. Sarah even made a sign to cheer on Brad and I. Thanks!!! That was very nice of her. She is pictured with Brad and I. Also, they gave out attendance prizes, which is always good. I won a gift certificate to a video store, Marvin won a t-shirt, and Brad won a round of golf or something like that. One item of note; Marvin and I didn't start right in the front and before the race everone was talking, the next thing we knew the coordinator said go and we're all just standing around. I pushed Marvin because I don't even think he was really facing forward. Oh well. This was a good out and back race, not sure if it was a true 3.1 miles.
