Waterloo Optimist 5K Run August 23, 2008

It seems whenever I write about these races I focus on the negatives. Well, this race will be no exceptions. There are two main points I want to complain about. The first is, slower runners should not start in the front of the run. For the first tenth of a mile I was trying to get around people. I had one kid start walking right in front of me and it was less than 10 seconds into the race. I almost ran over him! The second thing I want to complain about was the time it took to give out the medals. I’m not sure what the problem was but I was getting frustrated. The race started at 8:00. A little after 9:00 they announced they would start giving out awards in five minutes. About fifteen minutes later they started with the female runners. They gave the overall female trophy, waited a minute or two, gave female 14 and under, waited a minute or two, gave 15-19, etc. You get the idea. It was about 10:10 when they got to the men’s. Other than those two things the race was pretty good. I started out at a good pace, but not too fast. My first mile was 6:16. A lot of times it is under six. My overall time was slower this year but I was still able to get 1st in age group 35-39, time was 19:45. I was sixth overall. I probably could have been fifth, but with two tenths to go I passed a high school kid, gave him words of encouragement, and he passed me in the final stretch. I really need to learn to keep my mouth shut.

Don’t get me wrong. I do like this race. There are a lot of runners, the volunteers are nice and helpful, and my sister Paula was able to see the race. They changed the medals this year and I like them better than last year’s. Overall it is a good race that I hope to run again.Marvin did not run this race because of work. Also, Paula took the picture of me after the race, thanks.
