Murphysboro IL Apple Festival 5K

(Marvin) This is the second time I ran the Applefest 5K since it's rebirth 3 year's ago. It used to be a well organized event until the race director passed away. The new director has been trying really hard to bring back the race to it's former glory, but still is not quite there yet. The one thing was a misprint on the flyer's that said the race start at 9am when in fact that it started at 8am. This caused Dave to miss the race. I was able to call him, so he wouldn't have to waste a trip. The turn out was still good, but I wonder how many people showed up an hour late. When I was registering it seem that the volunteers were bickering at each other. Other than that everything else went off without a hitch. The morning was in the mid 60's with high humidity, and warming up quick. The wind was out of the south blowing hard from hurricane Ike that was making it's way across the Midwest. I started off with a good pace, but around the second mile going up the hill my strength was zapped. There was no wind and the sun was beating down hot. By the time I finished the run it look like I had been swimming with all the sweat on me. I finished the race with a time of 19:58 2nd in age 30-34 and 8th overall. I was pleased to finish under 20:00 minutes, but I lost a dollar bet to John Jones who beat me in the last mile. I will reclaim this dollar back from him at another race. One where it is a cool day. I really didn't want to go to this race, but the Pinckneyville Fall Classic is coming up, and I need to get to as many races as I can to promote the Fall Classic. The awards were good this year. I like the medal I received it had more substance to it than some of the other flimsy medals I received. The top three overall trophy comes with a medal apple on top which is cool. They used to give smaller ones for first in age, but I'm sure that would run up the expense. They also gave $100.00 to overall male and female. Not many races do that. Next year they made the announcement that a gentleman is donating prize money for the top 3 overalls male and Female. 1st-$200 2nd-$100 3rd-$50 ($700 total!) that is very generous for this area! I'm sure this will pull in tough competition. I'm going to mark that on my calendar, train hard, and see what happens.
