Nashville, IL Optimist Club 5K, Sept. 23, 2007

(Marvin) I wasn't for sure if I would be able to do this race because of work, but I got lucky where work had enough people and I got to go home on a turn around. I didn't have high expectations for this race. All week my body had been trying to recover from the Monster Adventure Challenge. Anytime I would go for a run I would have to cut it short for feeling exhausted. After running the race I felt disappointed with myself; like the glass is half empty kind of way. My time from last year would have made me the overall winner, and many of the 5K's I ran this year would have given me the overall male winner. For the overall they give a nice trophy cup; which would look nice on the shelf. I will try to keep this race in mind for next year for scoring that overall win. I have achieved one overall win in my 6 years of running and would like to score another. Hey, maybe the glass is half full instead of empty.... I had a time of 20:15 1st 30-34 and 4th/60 overall. Congratulations to Candace Caveny overall winner 18:57. It is not often in this area to see an overall winner female runner. I always admire competitive women runners even the ones that beat me.

(David) Sorry it took me so long to update my part of this blog. I know a lot of you "dumbites" have been eagerly anticipating it. Well, for starters, I didn't realize until Marvin pointed out to me that this was our fifth race for September. We did three 5ks, a biathlon, and an adventure race. Maybe that adventure race did take a lot out of me because my last year's time for this race was 10 seconds faster. This year's time was 20:20. My first mile was way too fast, 5:51. Marvin and I ran together for the first mile. It was kind of different too because we were in the lead until the one mile mark, then Candace passed us and we never saw her again. I ended up with 1st in age group 35-39 and 5th out of 60 overall. Marvin beat me by about four seconds. I like this race except that the start is about 3 or 4 blocks away from where you sign up and the finish line. It is not too hilly and the support is great. The police do a very good job of blocking traffic for the runners, we cross the highway three times. Also, bagels at the end, a plus.
